CAPTAIN AYRE

Captain Eric S. Ayre was a grandson of Charles R. Ayre, founder of Ayres and Sons, a department store in downtown St. John's, Newfoundland. When the war broke out, the rich Ayre family sent some of her sons overseas. On July 1st 1916, four of them died on the battlefields of the Somme: Eric, Bernard and their cousins Gerald and Wilfrid.
