Newfoundland At Armageddon


Why did the Newfoundland soldiers go over the top on July 1st in Beaumont-Hamel, even after seeing the dead and the wounded pile up in the communication trenches? Their descendants are wondering. Was it pride? Honour and bravery? Loyalty to their regiment and their fellow soldiers? Was it a sense of duty or the fear of being shot by their own officers? Perhaps all of these reasons.
