Private Jack Squires (sometimes referred as John), one of the First Five Hundred, survived Beaumont-Hamel, but was captured by the Germans at the battle of Monchy-le-Preux on April 14, 1917. His statement below tells us about the living conditions of prisoners during the Great War.
