Newfoundland At Armageddon

The noise from the bombardments on the morning of July 1, 1916 was so intense it was heard in London, 480 kilometres away. Some gunners became instantly deaf or had blood oozing from their ears. Allied bombardments began at 6:25 AM and ended at 7:20 AM, with the explosion of a mine at Hawthorn Ridge. The British advance was to start ten minutes later, but the Germans, recognizing the signal, had plenty of time to get in place behind their machine guns.
