Newfoundland At Armageddon

“Since my darling Edward left for the war, I have been beside myself with sadness and longing for him. I very much wanted to do something to help him and all the others in the regiment. Now, I am a member of the Women's Patriotic Association, and everything is changing for me. We have lots to do for our men at the front. I am so excited.”

“Finally finished! I delivered 13 pairs of mittens, ten scarves and three sweaters that I knitted myself. The first shipment to the front is scheduled for the day after tomorrow. I think of my darling Edward and hope he receives some of my knitting to keep him warm from head to toe. Let's hope he doesn't get hit by a bomb because our hats were only knitted with love and won't stand up to something like that.”

“Mother and I put collection boxes on nearly every street corner for people to give whatever they can. The last letter I have from Edward upset me greatly. I suspect he is hiding a lot of suffering. Especially after what my cousin Grace, who enlisted as a nurse, wrote to me. We must do everything we can to make their time overseas better. Every cent can make an enormous difference. Please God, help everyone to be generous.”
