Newfoundland At Armageddon

“Yesterday Tom told me his horrible news: he leaves for Europe with The First 500. I tried to convince him not to go, but he wouldn't listen. He said the war would be over quickly and he would be home before Christmas, but I'm not convinced. As I watch him go, my heart aches and I feel sick to my stomach. There's nothing I can do but pray.”

“Jenna convinced me to join the WPA. A group of us are making dressings and bandages for the Red Cross. This keeps me occupied. I am also making them for Tom, who knows… It gives me goosebumps to think about it. I'd better get back to work.”

“This week, Jenna and I went to visit some recovering soldiers who came back home. Some of them are in such bad shape, it tears at your heart. At least they are far from the horror. But the war seems to continue in their minds. These poor boys. I wonder what shape Tom will be in when he gets home… if he comes home at all. My heart aches just thinking about it.”
